The Alpha of Adversity
If you are looking to find success and be an outlier in todays landscape you need to understand a simple concept: there is gold where there is adversity.
The events that took place over the last few days in markets and the reactions by the timeline made me feel like this was a worthwhile write. I saw too many people react with "guess I'll go touch grass" or "it's over". This is unfortunately a normalized culture of avoiding adversity and friction. Since Friday many have expressed waiting for consensus on market direction to reenter instead of venturing to find where others were unwilling to go. The latter is exactly why you should have been locked in, fully engaged, and doing everything to find opportunity. This applies whether you are a trader, founder, or even content creator in the space (really this applies to anyone).
The greatest things you want to achieve are certainly behind incredibly hard paths. Unfortunately, todays content landscape has painted a false picture that to achieve wealth or success it happens overnight and that simply following the next hot token is the way to win. The highlighting of end results abstracts away the adversity ridden journey that was required to put that person in a winning position.
You need to understand winning is not easy. Success requires you to sacrifice, deal with incredible lows, to have to face failure over and over, and even take on immense risk that could ruin you. When others look at the opportunity they will tell you that your goals are idiotic, unachievable, a waste of time, and even that you are outright wrong. You'll be the odd one out. Feeling like you've gone mad for being the only one to see what lies ahead - seeing past all the reasons why not to continue. But the truly valuable things, the kind that reshape lives don't lie within easy grasp.
I've experienced this first hand throughout my career. Whether it was being told I wouldn't make it through engineering by a college advisor or having thousands of people laugh at the idea of getting a professional football club promoted or even from close friends laughing at me choosing to leave a comfy job to do crypto full time. Each time I have found a life changing success it has been after I've been bet against and laughed at. It fuels me. I've adopted that adversity and doubt into signal. It's a positive indicator to me that I'm off the beaten path and venturing down one that many will likely turn around on. The beaten path leads to average results. Average wins. Safe wins. There is nothing I love more than that feeling of being told something will fail. Every great outcome in my life has followed a period of chaos, uncertainty, and resistance. Over time I learned to stop fearing those moments and start seeking them.
In markets, alpha is outperformance. It's the edge that others miss or the edge others aren't willing to go after. The same applies to life and building. Adversity is alpha - it's the place others refuse to go, which is exactly why reward pools there. The harder the environment, the less competition, and the more asymmetry in outcome. Comfort produces mediocrity, which is something we have seen as the herd flocks from market narrative to market narrative instead of putting in the work of looking for the non consensus play. The best traders, builders, and founders have learned to turn friction into opportunity.
Every time the market nukes I see most people panic. But the great individuals (the ones I truly see at the top 0.1% of our industry) get to work. They dial in, they sift through the madness and look for opportunities that often are completely against the consensus of the rest of their peers, they build conviction when others capitulate. The market tests you before it rewards you. We've seen many great stories through the years of founders who have had to have over 100 meetings just to finish a seed round. Others who had to pivot their product multiple times before they found market fit. Traders who have had liquidation events such as over the weekend. But instead of letting setbacks or uncertainty be the end they choose to keep moving forward. This is how you win.
